2003 Blobeye Subaru Impreza WRX

Why we have this car is worthy of an explanation. In 2011 we were looking for a car to demonstrate how SuperPro can be used and what the benefits are:- precise & communicative handling, durability & alignment consistency while not creating a harsh ride quality or increased levels of cabin noise and vibration.

The key requirements were a car that was relatively old, around 8-10 years, have a reasonable number of miles on the clock, 80-100K, and while not heavily modified it should be a car which would interest the widest possible audience including the die-hard enthusiasts in the performance & tuning world. At the same time SuperPro had been endorsed by Subaru UK as a part of the Pro-R programme so a suitable Subaru with sporty pretensions would be perfect.

Our Impreza Side Profile

In 2011, we found our World Rally Blue 2003 Impreza WRX – 8 years old with 90K on the clock & only a few modifications – most of which we took back to standard before fitting a full SuperPro bush kit.  We fitted the SuperPro bushes and 2-3 thousand miles later a set of new Pirelli’s and used it as a daily hack. In the 20 months or so since the car has completed 35,000 miles of motorway & enthusiastic cross country driving. The car is exactly what we had hoped for – and a lot of fun.

Those who are familiar with Impreza’s will be aware of their hunger for rubber - you can read about how we solved this issue here. We have heard stories of lightly used daily drivers only getting 20K from the front tyres and more heavily modified & harder driven cars struggling to get past 10K. The issue is the effective 4WD system coupled with a powerful turbocharged engine. The result is movement in the front lower control arm rear bush allowing the wheels to toe-out under acceleration & scrub-off the inside edge.

So what were our tyres like after more than 30K hard miles?

Our tyres after 30k hard miles
Nice even wear patterns with a little bit of feathering on both edges. Essentially, the SuperPro bushes with the materials' inherent high levels of resilience are fighting the loads generated by the cars power & grip keeping everything in the correct position and the all-important tyre contact patch consistent. The result, higher levels of grip, lower rates of tyre wear and much more steering feel for the driver. These we have now replaced – the rears have a few more miles in them yet!!

Milltek Sport Resonated Cat-back Exhaust

We chose to fit the quieter of the two Milltek exhaust options to help keep the volume to a sensible level for daily use. Excellent sound boost without being too loud for daily use.

When offered a set of official STi bucket seats, we couldn't wait to fit them to our car. They've proved supportive, good-looking and, surprisingly comfortable.

2020

Unfortunately, we had to part with our trusty Impreza and the whole SuperPro team held a minute's silence (well, it was actually more of a minutes "burbling") after its departure. We were very sad to see it go and some staff members can still be heard doing impressions of the fabulous engine and GFB dump valve.
